Core Curriculum In The Humanities

All students are required to complete an integrated 12-course humanities core sequence. The requirements are arranged in progressive order, with the earlier courses providing the background and foundation for later offerings. Therefore, they must be taken in sequence and normally in the year designated.

The freshman courses (12 semester hours) are coordinated around the theme Foundations of Western Culture and are designed to ensure that students have the basic communicative skills, intellectual foundation and historical background needed to pursue their future studies. Students are introduced to the major concepts and developments of Western civilization, including issues concerning the roles of women and minorities within that civilization.

The sophomore courses (9 semester hours) are coordinated and integrated around the theme Perspectives on the Human Situation with ideas and perceptions drawn from both Western and non-Western cultures.

The junior courses (9 semester hours) allow students to concentrate more directly on certain subjects and study them in greater detail.

The senior courses (6 semester hours) provide students with a selection of offerings designed to help them integrate their education experience and improve their ability to express their ideas.

Other Core Requirements:

Natural Science-The study of the natural sciences helps students develop an appreciation of the scientific method, a better understanding of the environment and an awareness of the contributions of natural science to the modern world. Students must complete at least three semester hours in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics).

Social Science-The study of the social sciences helps provide a deeper understanding of human behavior and an awareness of the social, economic, political and psychological forces that help shape human affairs. Students must complete at least three semester hours in the social sciences (economics, education, political science, psychology, sociology/anthropology).
