General Information
The Mission Statement of Le Moyne College
Le Moyne College, the Catholic College in Syracuse,
New York, was founded in 1946 by the Society of Jesus. The institution
offers higher education in a 450-year-old intellectual and religious
tradition. The more than 300 Jesuit schools, colleges and universities
throughout the world stress academic excellence, preparation for life
in the professions or workplace, education of the whole person, respect
for the integrity and freedom of all persons, the formation of clear
goals in life based on solid religious or philosophic principles, an
emphasis on ethics and values, the development of a concern for others,
especially those most in need, and service to the local and regional
community.
The Jesuit tradition gives special recognition to Christian
revelation as a source of wisdom and the message of Jesus Christ as
a way to frame a meaningful philosophy of life. Because the search for
meaning and value is at the heart of the intellectual life, critical
examination of fundamental religious and philosophical questions is
integral to Jesuit liberal arts education. The College also provides
extensive opportunities for liturgical celebrations and service projects
for those who choose to take part in them.
As a comprehensive College, accredited by the state
of New York and the Middle States Association, Le Moyne shares the ideals
of academic freedom found in American institutions of higher education.
The College welcomes faculty and students of all racial, ethnic and
religious backgrounds. It provides educational opportunities for commuters,
on-campus residents, those already employed, and older students eager
to continue their education alongside traditional college-age students.
In its attempt to educate the whole person, Le Moyne
College is devoted to the pursuit of truth and the attainment of intellectual
excellence. Its programs aid students in facing the challenges of a
changing world environment, and in accepting the need to continue their
education during their entire lifetime. As a comprehensive college of
liberal arts and sciences, Le Moyne prepares students to make sound
decisions affecting both personal lives and social policy.
Because Le Moyne understands liberal education to be
value oriented, its faculty, administration and staff are expected to
help students fashion values for living in a fast-changing and complex
world. Five characteristics of Le Moyne's education are:
- paramount attention and concern for each student,
achieved through small classes, active student participation, and
ready access to professors and Student Life staff;
- a focus on undergraduate and masterÕs level
education with classes taught by a
- faculty primarily committed to teaching and interaction
with students while pursuing active scholarship;
- a core curriculum that provides an intellectually
rigorous and value-oriented education for all undergraduates, regardless
of their areas of specialization;
- the encouragement and institutional support of intellectual,
cultural, ethnic, economic, and religious diversity;
- a tuition, fees and financial aid policy that keeps
a quality private college education available to academically qualified
students.
To fulfill this mission, Le Moyne seeks - as students,
as faculty and as staff - men and women with the talent and desire to
assume roles of leadership and service in a dynamic world.
