About SEAL
Because there has been some confusion about SEAL's mission and the sorts
of activities and services that fall within its domain, we have developed
two short lists of what SEAL does and does not do. The lists appear below.
If you have any questions regarding SEAL activites, please contact either
of the directors.
| What SEAL does:
- Purchase, acquire via the Internet, and archive social science
data for research and instructional purposes for faculty and students.
- Serve as the locus of institutional capacity for both the development
of proposals for externally funded faculty social scientific research
and the execution of grants that are required.
- Serve as the 'work-station' and the 'locus of support' for student
assignments and projects in the social sciences that involve computer
based analysis in courses such as:
Social Science Department Honors Projects and Integral Honors
Projects
MTH 111-112 Statistics for the Social and Biological
Sciences I and II (revised sequence)
SOC 201/PSC 202 Research Methods for the Political and
Social Sciences
PSY 201 Introduction to Research Methods
SOC 265 Population/Demography
ECO 325 Econometrics
ECO 355 Managerial Economics
- Works with Information Technology to acquire and maintain analytic
software used by the social sciences and allied fields for instructions
and research.
- Acquires social science data sets and prepares them for use
by the analytic software available at Le Moyne College.
- Consults with faculty and students on questions concerning research
design and analytic techniques related to research projects or
class work.
- Facilitates the development and submission of proposals for
external funding in the social sciences and allied fields.
|
Because SEAL does not conduct primary research
and because SEAL does not have a formal teaching function at Le
Moyne, there are certain things that SEAL does not do:
- Collection of primary data from surveys, experiments, etc.
- Data entry from surveys, experiments, etc.
- Data analysis, e.g. running crosstabs, regression models, etc.
for faculty or students.
- Writing research designs.
- Mentoring students i.e. SEAL personnel do not act as faculty
substitutes.
