Community Outreach

Service learning through community outreach is a valuable portion of the Physician Assistant Program at Le Moyne College.  Our students partner with many agencies that serve a diverse population in the Syracuse N.Y. area.  We work to improve health literacy, reduce disparities in the underserved, and through this process broaden our perspectives and improve our cultural competency.  The service projects include working with The Center for New Americans, who assists new refuge families, the Salvation Army food pantries and teen pregnancy programs, or supporting local health clinics like Amaus and the Syracuse Community Health Center, or the West Side Learning Center who offer resources to the Spanish speaking community.  Some others are Booth House, which is a shelter that provides for runaway teens, Vera House supports women and families suffering from domestic violence, L’Arche provides for the developmentally disabled and Welch Terrace who offers housing and resources to the HIV/AIDs population names only a few of the organizations we have developed relationships with in our community.

On April 20, 2009 at Le Moyne College as part of a Social Justice Day celebration we presented our community service projects by displaying posters describing the agencies our Physician Assistant program has partnered with and the disparities they work against.  So although April was chosen as the month to participate in a Community Outreach Project it is the month we chose to celebrate the ongoing service learning within our community.
