NCAA Report: Dolphin Student-Athletes Continue to Excel in Classroom

Improving on an already impressive record of academic record, Le Moyne students continued to perform well above the average of other Division II schools in a recently released report from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that details graduation rates for both student-athletes and the overall student population.

Each year the NCAA issues a report detailing various measures of academic performance for all its member institutions. In the 2009 report, Le Moyne's student-athlete graduation rate was 90%, a figure that takes into consideration student-athletes completing their degree within six years from enrollment. Last year’s success rate for Le Moyne student-athletes was 83%. For all Le Moyne students, the average graduation rate improved from 70% last year to 79% this year, according to the report.

"The dramatic improvement for student-athletes, and indeed all students, is a tribute to our dedicated faculty, and the quality of the young men and women who are choosing a Le Moyne education," said Le Moyne President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D. "There are also many administrators and staff involved in academic support and services, as well as an outstanding coaching staff and others in athletics committed to ensuring that academics comes first for Le Moyne's student-athletes."

Average Graduation Rate
(average rate for students entering college in 1999, 2000, 2001, & 2002)
All students at Division II schools: 47%
All students at Le Moyne: 79%

All student-athletes at Division II schools: 70%
All student-athletes at Le Moyne: 90%

During the fall 2009 semester, 312 student-athletes' average semester GPA was 3.09, boosting the cumulative GPA to 3.10. Of the 17 athletic teams at Le Moyne, 10 earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher with 60 % of all student-athletes reaching the 3.0 mark this fall. The men’s tennis team earned the top honor for the semester with a team GPA of 3.59, with women's tennis next with a 3.57 semester GPA.

Since the 2003-04 academic year, Le Moyne student-athletes have had 13 consecutive semesters with an average team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. This semester marks both the highest average team semester and cumulative GPA Le Moyne student-athletes have achieved since 2003.

The most current rankings are in line with recent academic achievement of Le Moyne students. In 2003, Le Moyne was recognized by USA Today and the NCAA for having the highest graduation rate for scholarship athletes among all of the nation's 270 Division II schools, at 92%. Le Moyne trailed only three college and universities nationwide (regardless of division) in those rankings.
