Background Check

Please be advised that you will be required to undergo a background check at a point in the program. Applicants who answer "no" to questions relating to criminal background on their CASPA application and who are found to have a positive background check may be dismissed from the program on the basis of misrepresentation. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor may be denied certification or licensure as a health care professional. Information regarding eligibility may be obtained from appropriate credentialing boards. In addition, various clinical rotation sites may not permit participation in the clinical experience. This should be considered prior to making your deposit.

Planning Ahead

The following includes important information and resources for a smooth and successful transition as a Le Moyne College graduate student in the Physician Assistant Studies program.

  • Housing Options
The Le Moyne College Campus Life and Leadership Office offers a limited amount of graduate student housing. Graduate students will have their own bedroom in a shared, single family home owned by the College located close to campus. Homes are gender specific. No family housing is available on campus at this time. Homes are fully furnished, include all utilities, have off-street parking, WiFi and year-round maintenance. A one-year commitment/lease is required. The deadline to apply for graduate student housing is July 1 with move-in no earlier than August 1. Contact the Campus Life Office at (315) 445-4520 or campuslife@lemoyne.edu for rates and an application.
Students who enroll in our program further immerse themselves by living in the downtown area with a consistent offering of culture, while others choose the quiet and convenience of the suburbs. One great resource shared with us by previous students is the Downtown Committee of Syracuse website. For those who may be looking to offset their housing expenses, we encourage you to see where your fellow classmates are going to be living so you can find roommates!
  • Mentor Program
May: You will receive an invitation to join the PA Program Mentor Program which pairs new students with returning students. Your mentor will answer questions for you, "show you the ropes," and help you make a smooth transition to the program, to Le Moyne College and to the Syracuse community.
  • Medical Terminology Course
May: An online medical terminology course is required before classes begin in August. Instructions for access and completion will be sent by the Department of Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Registration
June: The Department of Physician Assistant Studies will register you for your fall courses and inform you when that process is complete. You will then have access to your course schedule.
  • PA Program Academic Calendar
The PA program generally begins 1-2 weeks before the traditional graduate and undergraduate semesters begin but finish final examinations according to the general College calendar. The second year PA schedule is continuous except for two weeks off at Christmas. Some specific dates to note:
May 11, 2020: Last day of Didactic Year and final exams for first-year PA students
May 18, 2020: Summer classes begin for first-year PA students
July 31, 2020: Tentative end of summer classes for first-year PA students
August 10 or 17: Tentative start of rotations; depends on the final College calendar
  • Requirements for Anatomy & Physiology and Physical Diagnosis Labs
Scrubs are required in the anatomy lab. The lab is cold so an extra lab coat would be beneficial although optional. Scrubs will be available for purchase at Orientation. There is no color or style requirement so scrubs you already use are acceptable.
Student white coats are required for the Physical Diagnosis Lab. These will also be available for purchase at Orientation. The vendor will be able to help select styles and sizes. The coats will be embroidered with the Le Moyne College PA program logo.
  • Equipment Needs
    - Laptop computers are required. The following guidelines provide a balance between price, performance and longevity. Note that this presumes the laptop is intended for general use and not as a gaming device:

    1. OS: Windows: 10  Mac: MacOS OSX 10.10 or higher
    2. Display Size: 13-17" depending on personal preference for mobility and weight
    3. CPU: Intel Core i5
    4. Memory/RAM: 8GB
    5: Storage: 256GB+SSD
    6. Video: 1600 x 900 display resolution (1920 x 1080 if available at the desired price point)
    7. Brand: Apple Dell, HP, or ASUS (Note: Le Moyne IT does not recommend Chromebooks due to lack of compatibility with essential software used for statistics and testing. Chromebooks will work on campus; however, access to campus-licensed software may be limited.)
Additional guidelines and recommendations can be found here

One final note, IT does not suggest the purchase of anti-virus or office software. There is quality AV software available free of charge (e.g., Avast) and Le Moyne students have full access to the Google Apps suite.

    - A privacy screen for your computers is also required before orientation.

    - August: A list of necessary medical equipment with a special pricing list will be available.
Again, congratulations on your admission to the Le Moyne PA program! We look forward to having you join us in the fall! If you have questions at any point, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask.
