    The Trillick Railway Outrage of 1854: Assassination and Alternative Facts in Post-Famine Ireland

    In September of 1854, a train carrying approximately 800 people was intentionally derailed as it approached the train station outside of a small village in northwestern Ireland. Sean Farrell, Ph.D., will address the aftermath of what became known as the "Trillick Railway Outrage" and how it shaped life in Victorian Ireland.

    Farrell is an associate professor of history at Northern Illinois University and a past president of the American Conference for Irish Studies. His most recent book is Building the House of God: The Rev. Thomas Drew and the Making of Victorian Belfast.
