Rituals and the Rules of Virtue

Many virtue ethicists hold that morality cannot be codified in universal principles or rules. Associate Professor of Philosophy Irene Liu challenges this view by drawing on recent scholarship that stresses the ethical significance of manners as well as Confucian views on the role of ritual (li) in moral life. Human virtues are shown to be forms of social excellence that must be actualized externally through rituals or manners. Since rituals or manners are governed by rules, there are at least some rules for morality.
