Le Moyne Names Catherine Brownell as Nursing Department Chair

Following a national search, Catherine Brownell, Ph.D. has been selected as the new chair of Le Moyne College's Nursing Program. In this position, she will have overall responsibilities for both graduate and undergraduate programs within the Department of Nursing. She will join the College on Monday, July 30.

Dr. Brownell comes from Utica College where she has been since 2002 serving in various capacities, including chair of the department of nursing, associate dean of nursing and, most recently, associate dean of health professions and education and the director of nursing programs. In addition to administrative positions, she also worked as an associate and assistant professor of nursing at Utica College. She began her career as a nursing instructor at Syracuse University from 1993 to 1998.

"I am thrilled and honored to be joining Le Moyne, which has a long history of excellence in nursing education," she said. "The recent expansion of several nursing programs, along with the expected dearth of qualified nurses and New York's recently signed "BSN in 10' legislation, positions Le Moyne perfectly to ensure those desiring a career in nursing will have ample opportunities."

"Given her experience both as an administrator and educator, Dr. Brownell is a perfect fit for this position," said Margaret Wells, Ph.D., dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies at Le Moyne, which houses the College's nursing programs. "She is a proven leader in the field of nursing education, and has demonstrated both innovation and hands-on expertise that will benefit Le Moyne nursing students."

Dr. Brownell holds a doctorate in nursing from Binghamton University, a masters of science from Syracuse University and a bachelor of science from SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica.
