Prayers and Support for Those Impacted by the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

As the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake and aftershocks experienced in Turkey and Syria continues to unfold, the more we are recognizing just how dire the situation remains. The current estimate is that more than 19,000 people have been counted among the dead since the earthquake hit on Monday, Feb. 6. Rescue workers on the scene are exhausted and overextended as are the aid workers helping survivors find food, clean water and shelter.

We also recognize that members of our student body, faculty and staff have family and friends who have been adversely affected by this tragedy. Let us keep them especially close in prayer and extend a helping hand in solidarity and hope where needed.

Arturo Sosa, S.J., the superior general of the Society of Jesus, expressed his solidarity and hope with the victims of the earthquake by stating: “Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones, homes and communities. We pray for the swift and safe recovery of all those who have been injured and for the comfort of those who have been impacted by this disaster.”

As a community that cares deeply for any and all who suffer in the world, we join our prayers with the people of Turkey, Syria and the world, that the suffering being experienced in the present moment will soon be alleviated.

If you are interested in helping those in need, please consider a gift given through the Jesuit Refugee Service or any trusted international aid organization. The link for the Jesuit Refugee Service can be found here.
