Bob Fagliarone ’59 studied accounting on the Heights and dedicated his professional life to that field, beginning his career as a staff accountant at Elmer Shaw and Co. and retiring five decades later as the owner of Fagliarone and Associates. Over the years he earned numerous honors and accolades in his field. The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ presented him with its Distinguished Service Award and inducted him into its Hall of Fame. Yet as Bob looks back on his work, he says that the courses he took in philosophy at Le Moyne were as critical to his success as the ones he took in accounting. It was in the former classes that he largely learned how to treat his customers, his colleagues, even his competitors – with honesty, respect and a deep commitment to the greater community.
Those lessons also inspired Bob and his wife, Kay, who worked alongside him over the years, to remain close to the College. Bob has served Le Moyne as a member of the board of regents, and has been recognized for his contributions to his alma mater and his profession with the Distinguished Alumnus Award and Frank Fernandez Business Leader of the Year Award. Together he and Kay have generously sponsored student scholarships to help ensure that future generations of students are able to avail themselves of the benefits of a Le Moyne education. Kay put it this way: “We wouldn’t be where we are today without Le Moyne, so we want to give back as much as we can.”
The couple recently gave a generous gift to support the College’s Quantitative Reasoning Center (QRC). Established this fall as part of the Le Moyne’s strategic plan, Sempre Avanti, the QRC promotes students’ mathematical skills in a variety of contexts and bolsters their overall ability to think critically. Among its chief aims is to imbue students with an appreciation for the importance of quantitative literacy, regardless of the field they pursue. In its first semester, the center has already offered clinics and review sessions to help students strengthen their number sense and techniques.
For Bob, supporting the QRC is a critical part of upholding the academic standards and mission of the College that has served him so well, personally and professionally, since the day he graduated.
“The education I received at Le Moyne was a springboard for everything I have done since then,” Bob said. “It really impacted every aspect of my life.”
