Karl Kodweis's Next Step: Pharmacy School

Academic Info.: Major in chemistry, minor in biological sciences

    Hometown: Rochester, N.Y.

Beyond the Classroom: Karl was involved with the Le Moyne Student Programming Board (holding positions from class rep to co-chair), and was involved with shows in the Performing Arts Center and with music and retreats through the Panasci Family Chapel.

Next Step: In fall of 2016, he will attending the Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (the #1 ranked pharmacy program in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report) as he works toward receiving a Pharm.D.

Long-term Goal: "My career goals are to follow a more clinical pharmacy program. A path that is more focused on research and the applications of certain medications or therapies in the fields of either pediatrics or psychiatry."

Le Moyne Support System: "Le Moyne was extremely helpful in preparing me for this program. Whether it was through the advice and guidance during the application process or courses that were able to shift my focus to topics of interest, my time at Le Moyne was critical in my pursuit of this program. The decision to take research-based path in pharmacy was a direct result of the courses and guidance of Dr. Joseph Mullins. Research was never a though in my head until Dr. Mullins allowed me to work in his undergraduate research lab, which was focused on the synthesis and characterization of natural products. Through his wealth of knowledge and his easily approachable demeanor, he was extremely helpful and critical in my future career goals. And for this I am forever grateful. "

On Growing: "Looking back over the past four years there were many experiences that changed me. Through my experiences, my eyes were opened to the love and sense of community that is present on Le Moyne's campus. It was these interactions that allowed for the transformation to someone that focuses more on helping others, and in doing so, helping myself."

Saying Goodbye: "I will miss teachers who are willing to do anything for the success of their students. I will miss the students who were able to help with a difficult class, due to their having to take it in a previous semester. I will miss the openness and respect that was present in each class, that established a judgement-free and educational environment. "

Advice for Future 'Phins: "Find an even balance. Don't get too wrapped up in the academic side of Le Moyne that you miss out on the social side. There is so much more that Le Moyne has to offer than just stellar academics. Therefore my advice would be to get out and get involved in clubs, groups, organizations, or any other aspect of Le Moyne that might interest you."
