Striving for Excellence on and off the Court

Phillip Blythe ’21 strives for excellence on and off the court. Growing up in Edinburgh, Scotland, Phil began playing tennis when he was 6 years old. Phil chose to attend Le Moyne for the opportunity to play Division II tennis, but quickly learned he could also have a high-quality education as well. Le Moyne’s smaller campus was another positive for Phil because of the friendly comfort of seeing familiar faces of both students and faculty. He got to know his fellow students better during Dolphy Day, an event which he looks upon fondly. Phillip decided to follow in the footsteps of his family by majoring in marketing. Marketing is a profession similar to his father’s, and Phil enjoys the social aspects of the field. Being a student athlete, Phil spends a lot of time training to compete at a high level, but he also enjoys the college lifestyle other Le Moyne students experience as well.

When he is not practicing tennis, Phil likes to safely socialize with friends or relax at his apartment and play Xbox. On weekends he likes to ski at Greek Peak, a hobby he picked up while in the US. Of course, Phil cannot enjoy all of these events if he did not have his academics in order. Phil makes sure to stay on top of his studies by keeping (and more importantly sticking to) a schedule by posting what he needs to do on his bedroom wall. Avoiding overstressing is also an important thing for Phil, and he does so by doing his work ahead of time. If Phil does get overstressed, he can alleviate it by excelling on the tennis court.

When he first competed for Le Moyne in 2016 against Daemen College, Phil won both his Singles and Doubles matches. Driven by his fiery competitive nature, Phil would go on to record a superb 76 wins to 36 losses. An impressive 31 wins came in the 2018-2019 season. Along with this feat, Phillip also placed in the quarter-finals at the 2018 Flushing Meadows regional tournament. Unfortunately for Phil and many other students not only at Le Moyne but across the country, COVID-19 caused quite the disruption to the following season. Le Moyne’s 2019-2020 tennis season was cut short only three weeks in. The season’s cancellation left Phil two wins short of setting a new Le Moyne all time tennis wins record.

This did not deter Phil however, who returned for the 2020-2021 season as a redshirt senior. Phil plans to graduate not only with this prestigious record, but also fond memories of his time at Le Moyne. (Note: Phil became the program's all-time wins leader as the men's tennis team registered a 7-0 win over Bentley University on April 3rd)
