Undergraduate faculty-mentored independent student research opportunities at Le Moyne foster strong research, writing, analytical and communication skills that will set you apart from your peers and prepare you to be a leader in your field of study.

These projects exploring chemistry, biology, biochemistry, mathematics, information systems, computer science, cybersecurity, environmental sciences or physics will provide you with hands-on experience and practical career possibilities when the time comes to explore your next step after your success on the Heights.

It was wonderful to be able to take the theories we’ve learned in our classes and to be able to use them to build something concrete. It required us to communicate, to collaborate and to be creative, which are skills we’ll use for the rest of our lives”

Research in Your Field Inspires Knowledge of Yourself

Research opportunities on the Heights allow you to learn about what appeals to you.

Clare Boothe Luce Scholars

The Clare Boothe Luce Research Scholars program at Le Moyne empowers high-potential undergraduate women majoring in chemistry, computer science, mathematics or physics. It provides scholars with a stipend for research and special mentoring. Scholars engage in hands-on, mentored research from concept to conclusion while building professional networks through STEM seminars, scholar-mentor lunches, and one-on-one advising. The program culminates in a public presentation of findings and a final research report.

“I love that the work we are doing is a continuation of an ongoing project. It’s a reminder that in research progress is measured not in weeks or even months but years. I look forward to checking back in five years to see what further progress has been made.” – CBL Scholar Eva Keohane

D-SURF Fellowships

The D-SURF Program, part of SUNY Upstate’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), is a competitive opportunity created specifically for Le Moyne students interested in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, or physiology. This immersive ten-week experience places you in a leading biomedical research lab, where you’ll conduct hands-on investigations, attend research seminars, explore career paths in science, and learn what it takes to apply to graduate school. Participants receive a stipend for the period, along with residential housing at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

“I lived in Syracuse and worked full time in Dr. Huiayu Hu’s lab at Upstate Medical University researching a genetic blinding disease, retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis Pigmentosa causes progressive degeneration of photoreceptors resulting in total vision loss. I created scientific figures, wrote an article and presented my findings. I also helped assist and other projects in the lab as well, giving me a lot of new experience with equipment I hadn’t been able to work with before.” – D-SURF Fellow Nicole Gubitosi

McDevitt Research Scholars

McDevitt Research Fellows work closely with a Le Moyne faculty mentor while conducting hands-on research in Information Systems, either on campus at Le Moyne or in the field.

“As a McDevitt Information Systems Fellow, I’ve learned how to be a better listener and how important research is. I’ve developed is the ability to work in a team and to communicate my thoughts and ideas to other people. I’ve acquired some very important skills that I’ll use for the rest of my life.” James McGarvey ’24

Ignite Fellowships

Internships have the potential to provide you with hands-on, practical and all-around transformative experiences, but they sometimes come with a financial burden. In order to offset the costs often associated with internships – housing, food, inability to work at a paying job – the Ignite Fellowship offers a collection of scholarships to provide you support so you focus on the incredible outcomes internships usually provide.

“Supported by the Ignite Fellowship, my nine-week sales internship at Gallagher in Latham, NY, allowed me to master real-world client communication, resilience, and business strategy beyond the classroom. Easing the financial burden of my daily commute enabled me to focus entirely on my growth. The best outcome of the summer speaks for itself: I’ve been discussing full-time opportunities with Gallagher following graduation.” – Grace DeNisio ’27

Funding Your Undergraduate Research

Great ideas deserve the opportunity to grow. At Le Moyne, students can explore funding opportunities that help make undergraduate research possible. Depending on the program and eligibility requirements, support may include research stipends, funding for project supplies, and assistance with presenting research at academic conferences.

Le Moyne’s Student Research Committee also supports qualifying research, entrepreneurial, and creative projects across academic disciplines, including funding for supplies and conference travel.

Going to Costa Rica after learning about some principles of forest ecology gave me the ability to connect what I was seeing to what I learned, and allowed me to ask deeper questions about how the ecosystem maintains balance within its great biodiversity.”
