When you travel somewhere new, you’ll have to adjust to new customs and routines. For example, in the Netherlands people bike everywhere. Sure there are trams, trains and Ubers available, but many Dutch people seem to find that bikes are the simplest, cheapest form of transportation available. This may take some getting used to if you don’t typically move around on two wheels. Remember: You don’t have to change overnight. Just be open to learning and adapting to the changes life will inevitably bring to you.

Learning as much as you can about a place before arriving there will help you a lot! To find out if a place is right for you, investigate what language its residents speak, what kinds of food they most commonly eat, and what kind of housing will be available to you to help determine whether or not it will be a good fit. You want to be comfortable and at peace when you travel, and that requires research.

In Our Dolphins' Words
Paige - Accra, Ghana
Visiting places like Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle brought my coursework on West African women writers to life in a way no book ever could. Seeing that history firsthand was heartbreaking, eye-opening, and deeply transformative. This experience changed how I understand the world and my place in it.
Brianna - Prague, Czech Republic
Studying Brecht and Havel while traveling to Berlin and Prague brought our coursework to life in a powerful way. Seeing sites like the Berlin Wall and attending performances in the cities where these works were written helped me understand the historical and cultural context in a way a classroom alone never could.
Jordan - Bologna, Italy
Seeing Italy through film and then visiting the places where those movies were shot was an experience I’ll cherish forever. Despite the long days and little sleep, every moment was meaningful, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
