ERIE21 isn’t just about technology — it’s about transformation.
ERIE21 bridges critical workforce development gaps in the local economy by equipping underserved individuals—from 6th grade through adulthood—with the education, skill development, and support needed to thrive in tech careers and beyond. Through education, training, and certifications, we create career pathways and lasting opportunities for our students.
We’re here to remove barriers, expand possibilities, and help individuals claim their place in the innovation economy. By investing in people and their potential, ERIE21 is shaping a stronger, more inclusive future for Syracuse and beyond.
Our History
In 2018, local leaders recognized a series of once-in-a-generation challenges facing the region. Specifically, the Syracuse community was suffering from some of the highest concentrations of poverty in the US according to the 2020 US Census:
- 12.7% of families had an annual income less than $10,000
- 29.6% of Syracuse residents fell below the poverty line
And these numbers continue to climb. According to the 2023 US Census:
- 13.6% of families had an annual income less than $10,000
- 31.6% of Syracuse residents fell below the poverty line
We saw a way to address this by leveraging the incredible growth opportunities coming to the community – but we need to ensure local underserved people get the support necessary to develop essential skills for the growing in-demand jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Thus, ERIE21 was officially launched in Fall 2019. Grounded in the belief that investing in the local talent pool through wrap-around support services and real-world experiences, the organization has tirelessly worked to bridge education and opportunity gaps to unlock potential across generations.
The ERIE21 Mission
To empower individuals through education, mentorship, and workforce development — cultivating socially responsible, tech-capable leaders who are ready to shape their own futures and strengthen their communities.
We connect learning with opportunity, providing the tools and support needed to access meaningful careers and contribute to a more inclusive innovation economy in Central New York.
Our Impact
Since inception, ERIE21 has served over 1,700 individuals, building a dynamic local talent pool that is inclusive, future-ready and responsive to workforce needs. The program continues to expand through strong partnerships with local schools, community organizations and employers — fueling economic growth and personal transformation across the region.
