In the century between 1820 and 1920, almost 8 million Irish men and women migrated to nearly every corner of the globe, and as scholars from Cian McMahon to Colin Barr have noted, their contacts with one another created a sense of connection, sometimes referred to as “the Irish World.” Within that world, however, one found significant diversity in their
approach to their new settlements and their attitudes toward the Irish at home. Timothy G. McMahon, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Marquette University, will interrogate one such comparison, that is, between the Irish who settled in the United States and those who settled in the Australian colonies, in particular through their attitudes toward imperialism at the end of the 19th century.
