Please join us on Tuesday, April 7 at 4 p.m. in the Reilley Room for the fourth talk in the spring 2026 Social Science Seminar Series. Linea Cutter, Ph.D., assistant professor of political Science at SUNY Oswego will present “Politics, Pills, and Injections: Examining Ozempic’s Place in U.S. Diet Culture”

Using insights from political, feminist, and queer theorists, this talk contextualizes the popularity of diabetes and weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy as part of a longer history of appetite suppressant use and marketing in the United States. It demonstrates that diet and weight loss medications are often marketed as tools to help individuals manage their unhealthy cravings and make responsible choices in a food system saturated with hyperpalatable, ultra-processed foodstuffs.

The Social Science Seminar Series is sponsored by the social science departments: anthropology, criminology and sociology; economics; political science; and psychology.
