Scope of Practice

Le Moyne College Counseling Center offers a flexible integrated model in order to meet students where they are at and offer the most appropriate level of care. Like most college counseling centers, we focus on short-term intervention modeled around the college calendar. We provide mental health services within the limits of our expertise to help students with a wide range of issues. Students presenting with a concern that requires services not available at the Counseling Center will be referred to off campus resources for more specialized treatment during a single session appointment.

Counselors in the Wellness Center are licensed professionals with advanced training in such fields as mental health counseling, social work, and substance abuse. While each staff member has particular areas of interest and expertise, all are experienced professional counselors who are prepared to help you in dealing with a wide range of concerns.

The Counseling Center also serves as a training site for various graduate programs outside of Le Moyne College, so you may also have an advanced trainee assisting you in resolving your concerns. These advanced students practice under the direct supervision of an experienced mental health professional, so you can be certain that you will receive excellent care.

Counseling Services is funded by the Le Moyne Student Health Fee and resources are available free of charge to registered Le Moyne Students. If a student is referred off campus for services they are responsible for any fees associated with that provider or agency.

No. While all of our clinical staff are able to diagnose, professionally trained and licensed therapists, we refer students to off-campus services if a diagnosis needs to be made.

We do not have a psychiatric provider on staff and are unable to prescribe psychotropic medications. Referrals can be provided for off campus providers.

The counseling center doesn’t provide documentation to professors for missed classes. In some rare cases, the office can provide an appointment verification for the student to share with their professors if deemed necessary.

The counseling center staff adheres to all applicable state laws and ethical standards, which require that all client information be held in strict confidence. To provide effective service and, as consultation and/or supervision is a standard component of professional practice, your counselor may discuss your case with other Counseling Services Center staff. Except in an emergency situation, however, no one outside the wellness center is given any information — even the fact that you have been here —without your prior consent.

Records of counseling sessions are not part of a college student’s education record and are accessible only to the wellness center staff. Files are maintained for seven years, and then destroyed in a manner consistent with all applicable confidentiality laws and policies. If you have any questions or concerns regarding confidentiality or service, we encourage you to discuss them with your counselor.

Exceptions to client confidentiality include the following:

  • Abuse of children
If a staff member has reason to believe that a child under the age of 18 is currently being abused or neglected.
  • Imminent harm to self or others
If a staff member has reason to believe that you are in danger of physically harming yourself or someone else.
  • Age limitation
If you are under 18, we cannot guarantee you confidentiality. If contacted by your parents, we would have to answer their questions in regard to your treatment.
  • Court orders
When ordered by a court of law.

Yes. Federal and State law, as well as ethical professional practice standards, require us to maintain a record of your clinical services for at least seven years. These records are maintained securely in an electronic medical record that is separate from that of other Le Moyne College facilities. Records are not accessible to faculty, administration, or other students and can be released only with your authorization, with the exceptions outlined under “Confidentiality,” above.

The Wellness Center for Health and Counseling does not provide documentation for emotional support animals, medical housing or academic accommodations. The reason being is that the Wellness Center does not provide diagnosis, testing, assessment, or verification of the need for psychological/academic/physical accommodations that is required by Le Moyne College. Therefore, we legally can’t provide the appropriate documentation that a student would be required to submit. The necessary paperwork will need to come from an outside provider such as a primary care physician, therapist or psychologist. Our staff can provide a list of community referrals to further assist with a student’s particular request for accommodations.

The counseling center provides an array of outreach and programming services throughout the academic year. If you are interested in having us host or being present at a specific event please contact the office by phone or email.
