In March Tiananmen Tonight: Journalism and Courage was screened on campus to a full house in Grewen Auditorium. The film, co-directed and written by Professor Michael Streissguth (English and communication), captures a shining moment in that tradition when CBS aggressively covered the Tiananmen Square uprising in China in 1989. In the spirit of the First Amendment, the network news team informed Americans of developments in China, so they could make informed judgments about our government’s relationship with China. Shown above are Tom Bettag, former executive producer of the CBS Evening News, on left, and Professor Streissguth.

The film has played to enthusiastic audiences at the National Press Club in Washington DC, the Independent Film Festival Boston, the Chautauqua Institution, the University of TexasFordham University and other venues. It also won the Cantwell Award for Excellence in Documentary Filmmaking. Learn more about the documentary here.
