Message from President LeMura on Buffalo Shooting

Yesterday, hate led an individual to drive 200 miles from his home near Binghamton to a grocery store in Buffalo, put on protective battle gear and open fire on innocent people going about their daily lives.

By the time the white shooter was captured, 10 people were killed and three injured – of the 13 who were shot, 11 were Black. Officials have labeled the shooting as a racially motivated hate crime. The shooting took place less than a mile from the campus of our sister Jesuit institution Canisius College. Roberta Drury, 32, from Syracuse has been identified as one of those killed.

Racially motivated violence is caused by a number of social, political, cultural and psychological conditions. As a society, and an institution of higher education, we are called upon to better understand the factors that contribute to hate and counter them through education and co-curricular programs informed by social justice and restorative practices. A violent and hate-filled event such as this reminds us of our commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and the need to respect the life and dignity of all persons and to act in solidarity whatever our racial, ethnic and ideological differences.

I condemn in the strongest possible terms the crime that took place yesterday in Buffalo and reaffirm my commitment as president of Le Moyne to create an anti-racist and inclusive community that works to undo the conditions that contribute to such events.

Individuals in the Le Moyne community who are in need of assistance can contact our Wellness Center for Health and Counseling at 315-445-4195 (for more information click here) or use the My SSP App (click here to learn more).

We pray today for those who have been impacted by this horrific act and for all residents of Buffalo, who are coping with the aftermath of this shooting. May God provide them with strength and fortitude during this most difficult time.

    Sincerely,
    Linda M. LeMura, Ph.D.
    President
