Please join us on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Reilley Room for the first event in the spring 2026 Social Science Seminar Series. Monica Deza, Ph.D., associate professor of economics in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University will discuss “The effect of health micro-shocks on crime and fatalities: Evidence from seasonal pollen variation.”

Think allergies just mean a runny nose? This talk explores how seasonal pollen allergies cause dramatic and understudied fluctuations in major societal outcomes: traffic safety and crime. Learn about how to better understand these effects and develop public policy responses.

The Social Science Seminar Series is sponsored by the social science departments: anthropology, criminology and sociology; economics; political science; and psychology.
