Incarcerated men and women live behind both literal and figurative walls. The isolation they experience is mind-numbing. Prison education programs are a means of developing the humanity of these persons and breaking down some of these barriers.

In this address, Thomas Curran, S.J., will reflect upon the role these kinds of initiatives play in allowing us to walk together and grow in communion with one another.

In 2023, Father Curran founded the Jesuit Prison Education Network (JPEN) which provides college credit classes in prison through the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) and the Catholic College Consortium for Prison Education. He served as the 14th president of Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Mo. from 2006 to 2022.
