A Day to Give Back: D.I.V.E. Day on The Heights
Some of the most meaningful days on The Heights don’t happen in a classroom.
On Saturday, April 11, more than 150 members of the Le Moyne community came together for D.I.V.E. Day (Dolphins in Volunteer Efforts), a campus-wide day of service dedicated to giving back to the Syracuse community. From the first gathering at the McNeil Firehouse to the final moments of reflection and shared meals, the day was filled with connection, purpose, and a whole lot of heart. D.I.V.E Day celebrates the legacy of Fr. John Bucki, S.J., whose commitment to faith, justice, and community continues to inspire the Le Moyne community today.
Participants made an impact both on and off campus. On campus, volunteers assembled sandwiches for the Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter, created “Kid Kits” for the Catholic Charities Pre-K Program, put together hygiene blessing bags for Catholic Charities Refugee Services, prepared welcome home baskets for A Tiny Home for Good, and wrote thank-you cards for veterans at the VA Hospital. Others spent the day out in the community, supporting local organizations and building meaningful connections across Syracuse, including the Rescue Mission, Brady Faith Center, Brady Farm, All Saints Church, We Rise Above the Streets, and Homer Wheaton Park.
Giving Back, Together
Here’s a look at the moments, and the voices, that made it special.
We asked participants what stood out to them most during the day and the responses echoed one theme: “Giving back to something greater than myself.”
“It stood out how many people volunteered and enjoyed their time. It was nice to see everyone come together to help others.”
“It was impactful to see the reaction from the people in the community and how they are able to benefit from the help.”
“This day of service made me realize just how fortunate we are to be in a position to be able to give back and also the way that it impacts the community in a positive way.”
“I loved how everyone was helping each other because it just showed how great the Le Moyne community is.”
“I’m planning to continue to serve beyond this one day.”
Be grateful. Be open to questions and uncertainties. The best is yet to come!”
