As an elementary school student, Sabina Muradova ’24 did not understand what it means to be Jesuit educated, but she did know that she wanted to become part of the Le Moyne community. Muradova grew up on Springfield Road, across the street from the College. Her earliest years were filled with the sights and sounds of students and faculty members going to and from class, and she regularly explored the campus with her family. By the time she was ready to begin her own undergraduate journey, she trusted that the College was going to be the right fit for her.

Muradova entered Le Moyne with an affinity for music and science. The former inspired her to continue her 12-year-long study of the piano, and to compose an original piece based on her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter led her to pursue a major in biology with an eye toward working in health care. Still, she was not sure what the future would hold until she helped lead Campus Ministry’s Explore program, which aids first-year students in acclimating to college life. Among the students she worked with was a young woman who shared Muradova’s love for music and who was blind. Their conversations inspired Muradova to consider how she could best use her talents to aid in helping the millions of Americans who are blind or visually impaired.

I was able to do a lot of reflecting during my time at the College, both in and out of the classroom. I became more confident and, most importantly, I learned to become an advocate for myself and others.”

To that end, this fall Muradvoa will begin pursuing a doctoral degree in optometry at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Ironically, she says that one of the reasons she knew the rigorous four-year program would be a good fit for her was that, during the interview process, she and one of the faculty members in the program found that they share a love for classical music. They reflected on the ways in which art can serve as an outlet for energy and imagination. Now as she looks to the future, Muradova credits Le Moyne with preparing her to pursue something she loves while remaining connected to her humanity.
