Building a Life You’ll Love: One Step at a Time
Choosing a major. Picking a career. Making decisions that feel… huge. At Le Moyne, we get it—and we’re here to help.
Professor Leslie Streissguth didn’t set out to be a career advisor. But today, she helps students across all majors figure out what really lights them up. Her secret? A mindset called life design, an approach developed at Stanford and rooted in reflection, experimentation, and real conversations.
How Does it Work?
Try It On Before You “Buy” It
“Most students think they have to decide right away,” Leslie says. “But really, you need to explore first.” That’s where life design comes in. Students in Leslie’s career practicum classes learn to reflect on what they want to do, create a plan, talk to professionals, test out ideas, and ask the right questions before getting frustrated by committing to a path that doesn’t fit. “It’s like trying on clothes,” she says. “You don’t buy something without seeing how it fits first. Careers are the same.”
From Passion to Plan
Leslie’s students come from everywhere—finance, biology, communication, film. What do they have in common? They want a life that feels meaningful and potentially impactful. “I always tell students: Do what engages you,” she says. “When you’re interested, you’ll do better, learn more, and discover opportunities you didn’t know existed.”
