Dolphin Tank 9
In April, the Keenan Center brought the energy with Dolphin Tank 9, drawing more than 300 people to cheer on 10 student-run ventures as they pitched for $50,000 in funding. The packed crowd, including industry leaders from across New York state, spoke volumes about the growing momentum behind the Keenan Center’s mission and its rising role in shaping the future of innovation in the region.
10 Entrepreneurs $50,000 at Stake
“We had the most diverse crowd in terms of background. Everyone from entrepreneurs who live in the Le Moyne neighborhood to Stephen Gilfus, founder of Blackboard, was there. People from the entrepreneurial community came out to support the next generation. That’s what this is all about.” – James Shomar, Associate Director
“Small businesses are the backbone of regional economies, particularly in New York state. It was great to see students who were not waiting to start their businesses until after graduation. Most were already starting to build and grow and test their product.” – Jennifer Tegan, managing director, NY Ventures at Empire State Development
“Dolphin Tank is not Shark Tank. It’s not about picking which business is the best, which makes the entrepreneurs practical about what they need funding for. Since 2019, over $320,000 in awards has been distributed through Dolphin Tank. Those companies have gone on to cumulatively generate over $3.6 million in revenue since receiving their awards.” – James Shomar, Associate Director
At Dolphin Tank, judges and sponsors do more than show up. They show up for the future. Their support, mentorship, and presence help fuel a growing pipeline of opportunity for our student entrepreneurs, building a vibrant, sustainable culture of innovation across Central New York.
