English Professor Ann Ryan Awarded Prestigious Tuckey Award by Center for Mark Twain Studies

The Center for Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College has honored Le Moyne English Professor Ann Ryan ’85 with the John S. Tuckey Award, given to a scholar in recognition of lifetime achievements and contributions to Mark Twain studies.

Presented only once every four years, past recipients of the award include Shelley Fishkin, a professor at Stanford University, Susan K. Harris, professor emerita at the University of Kansas, and Tom Quirk, professor emeritus of the University of Missouri.

“I’m deeply grateful to the center and my friends in the Twain community; it’s an honor to be recognized by such exceptional scholars,” said Ryan.

The award is named for John S. Tuckey’s (1921-1987) scholarship on Mark Twain’s later writing, which forced scholars to fundamentally reevaluate their perceptions of Twain and his literature.
