Cinema Under the Stars: Le Moyne Students Explore Bologna and Beyond
Professor Julie Grossman, Ph.D., has taught American Film Abroad five times, a course that culminates in travel to il cinema ritrovato, the Bologna film festival that takes place in late June every summer.
There is nothing that exists in the world like the experience of watching a pristine restored print of a classic film in the evening under the stars in the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, Italy. I am continually thrilled to see students become so excited about film culture and history, as well as beautiful Italy and the history and academic setting of Bologna, the home of the oldest university in the western world. ”
Film, Food, and Friendship
“During our ten days in Bologna this past summer, we watched multiple films every day but also had time to visit Venice, tour a film restoration lab, participate in a music and silent film seminar, explore some of the beautiful churches in Bologna that are rich with history, and visit the San Luca sanctuary, hiking down to the city from there, passing under 666 arches (the longest portico in the world!). ” Dr. Julie Grossman
“I have always dreamed about taking a trip overseas, and the American Film Abroad course allowed for this dream to come true. From walking the streets of Bologna, watching films in the Piazza Maggiore at the film festival, and hanging out with friends in Modena, I will never forget what it was like to be in Italy for the first time. Despite the lack of sleep, no moment was wasted and every moment I am incredibly grateful to have experienced. I have watched many movies filmed in Italy, and now I have finally visited some of the locations where they were shot. I will cherish this opportunity forever.” Jordan ’25
“As someone with a deep passion for travel and seeking discomfort, taking American Film Abroad in Italy was the perfect experience for me. I got to meet strangers at the festival, all of whom were there for the same reason: to enjoy and digest the film. Exploring Bologna, Venice, Crema, and Modena allowed me to connect with locals and have a profound respect for Italian culture, as well as learn more about myself and what I want for my future. I was even able to visit where my favorite movie, ‘Call Me by Your Name’ was filmed. Getting to experience this with my friends, Katie and Jordan, was one of the most rewarding experiences that I will never forget. Getting to study abroad with them made each day a new, exciting experience.” Mandy ‘26
