Shining a Little Extra Light Out into the World

As the days grew shorter, Le Moyne students redoubled their efforts to shine a little extra light out into the world. They made sandwiches for the hungry, prepared to embark on service trips abroad, and collected clothing for those in need. Their work brought together charities, families and businesses, and served as a reminder of the importance of philanthropy to the local, national and global community.

Since its founding in 1946, Le Moyne has impressed upon its students the importance of giving back and of serving others. The College has also been the beneficiary of much generosity, most recently on Giving Tuesday, a global initiative dedicated to giving back by mobilizing people around the world to make gifts of support to the causes closest to their hearts. Many alumni and friends decided to use the day to support Le Moyne. Over a 24-hour period, 233 individuals made gifts to the College totaling $36,158.

“We are blessed to have generous alumni who are willing to support the College in this way,” said Bill Brower, vice president for communications and advancement. “Giving Tuesday is a wonderful way to build a spirit of philanthropy on campus, and to raise awareness of the work we are doing every day.”

Notably the contributions made to the Le Moyne on Giving Day helped to fuel the College’s comprehensive campaign, Always Forward. The campaign both recognizes Le Moyne’s roots – always rigorous, always creative, always intellectually curious — and welcomes the forward movement of life, the invigorating call of and response to current circumstances with a sense of purpose and innovation. It directs funds where they are most urgently needed, for example to advance scholarship and research opportunities for students and faculty members, and to support the College’s Writing Center, Quantitative Reasoning Center, Integral Honors Program and Manresa Program.

Among those who played a leading role in the success of Giving Tuesday was alumna and trustee Barbara Scanlon Jessup ’79, who supported it with a matching gift of $10,000.

“It has been 40 years since I graduated from Le Moyne and, as I reflected on my time at the College, it was important for me to give back,” she said. “I am proud to say that Le Moyne has never been stronger – from its leadership to its faculty to its programming – and there is a clear vision for its future. Now that I am in a position to give back to the College, I am happy to be able to do that for the next generation of alumni.”

The gifts made during Giving Tuesday will benefit the $100 million Always Forward campaign.
