Le Moyne College Joins Jumpstart’s Read for the Record

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College celebrated Jumpstart’s Read for the Record on Oct. 2, a national campaign designed to break the world record for the number of adults and children reading the same book on the same day, while also working to break the cycle of illiteracy. Through its Jumpstart program at P.E.A.C.E., Inc. – Sumner Head Start, Le Moyne engaged over 200 children and adult volunteers in reading and activities center around the children’s book, “Corduroy.”

“Current research overwhelmingly supports the importance of facilitating early and emerging literacy skills in preschool-age children as a critical foundation for literacy development,” said Tina Minervini, Jumpstart Syracuse site manager. “Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is a positive way to raise awareness about the importance of early childhood literacy skills.”

Jumpstart – through its Read for the Record campaign and intensive early education programs – puts books in the homes of children who need them most and focuses on helping them make gains in crucial language and literacy skills. The Pearson Foundation, sponsor and founding partner of the campaign, once again underwrote the cost of this year’s campaign book, “Corduroy.” The foundation also helped to organize events nationwide.

The 2008 campaign was designed to encourage young people, their families and educators everywhere to set a Guiness World Record by creating the largest shared reading experience ever for the most children reading with an adult the same book on the same day. The day’s activities were designed to generate public awareness about the importance of early childhood education.
