Le Moyne College Announces Speaker, Honorary Degree Recipients for 59th Commencement Ceremony
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) …Le Moyne College will hold its 59th commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Onondaga County War Memorial. Charles Currie, S.J., president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), will be the commencement speaker.
Lisa Sowle Cahill, George Coyne, S.J., and Kathleen Haser will all be awarded the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters at the ceremony.
Father Currie has been the president of the AJCU since August of 1997. He is responsible for the overall coordination of the work of the association, and is the liaison between American Jesuit higher education and various officials of the Catholic Church, the Society of Jesus and higher education at large.
Prior to beginning his work at the AJCU, Father Currie served Jesuit higher education in a variety of ways, including as president of Wheeling College (now Wheeling Jesuit University) and Xavier University. Father Currie was rector of the Jesuit Community at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, where he also taught a course in theology and science.
Lisa Sowle Cahill is the J. Donald Monan, S.J., Professor at Boston College, where she has taught theological ethics since 1976.
George Coyne, S.J., is the former director of the Vatican Observatory and has written extensively on physics and astronomy.
Kate Haser is the director of Jesuit Volunteer Corps: East, where she began work as a volunteer in 1980.
