Le Moyne College Hosts Discussion on Medical Ethics

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Dr. Gregory L. Eastwood, professor of bioethics and humanities and professor of medicine at Upstate Medical University, and Dr. Samuel Gorovitz, professor of philosophy and founding director of the Renée Crown University Honors Program at Syracuse University, will discuss “Medical Ethics in an Increasingly Complex World” on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Grewen Auditorium at Le Moyne College.

Two important issues have been prominent in recent news: the emerging power of the genetic mapping of individuals, and the increased attention to inequities in access to health care in the U.S. These seemingly unrelated topics have in common that they are widely misunderstood and call for ethical leadership that has accuracy, integrity, and courage. Eastwood and Gorovitz will discuss these issues, with concern for how moral and intellectual integrity apply to each of them.

This event will be moderated by Dr. Susan Bastable, associate dean of applied health sciences and professor of nursing at Le Moyne. It is jointly sponsored by Le Moyne College and Syracuse University and is part of the Spring 2009 Intelligent Conversation Series: Ethical Dilemmas in a Changing World.  The event is free and open to the public.
