Le Moyne College Hosts Talk on Irish Horror Film Genre

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College hosts a talk by Matt Fee on “The Rural Horrors of Contemporary Irish Cinema” on Tuesday, March 15, at 4 p.m. in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall.

The Irish film industry has witnessed a boom in contemporary horror cinema. In this presentation, Matt Fee investigates how various films cinematically transform pastoral Ireland—historically visualized by tourism, American cinema and Irish nationalism as a space of lush green fields and languid farms—into a shadowy space of menace and murder, of the uncanny and the irrational. The films not only challenge traditional bucolic depictions of Ireland, but shed light on contemporary anxieties surrounding the place of the rural, or lack thereof, in a post-industrial and globalized Ireland.
Fee is Park Scholar Director in the Department of Cinema, Photography and Media Arts at Ithaca College. He holds a doctorate from New York University.

The talk is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Film Studies and the Irish literature program.
