    Welcome to the Spanish Major

Foreign language studies at Le Moyne aim to acquaint students with a language, culture and civilization different from their own. As part of their program of study, Spanish majors are required to spend a semester abroad, as well as take the Oral Proficiency Interview, a linguistic competence test developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Le Moyne also offers a sequence leading to New York state teaching certification for those looking to teach Spanish to others. Students will not only learn the language, but explore all aspects of the Spanish culture.

The Foreign Languages and Education Departments also offer a Five-Year Program leading to a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science for Teachers in Spanish and Adolescent Education.

    Spanish, Peace & Global Studies

After graduating Le Moyne, I earned a master’s degree in Medical Anthropology at Creighton University, where I worked as a Program Coordinator for the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC). Currently, I work for Jesuit Volunteer Corps’ International Program Office, based in Washington, D.C. I serve as an International Program Coordinator, overseeing JVC’s programs in Chile, Nicaragua and Peru.

My Spanish language ability has aided me tremendously in my current role and past positions. There are numerous benefits of studying a foreign language, such as the ability to communicate in cross-cultural settings, the ability to enhance one’s cultural geography, and the variety of global service and professional opportunities that arise from proficiency in a language. But the greatest benefit from my perspective is the ability to create rich personal relationships with diverse sets of stakeholders. Cultivating these relationships promotes greater cultural understanding and awareness at a time in history when societies are now more interconnected than ever.

After graduating from Le Moyne, I earned a master's degree in health care management (MHA) at Cornell University and I completed a postgraduate fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I am now the Director of American Anesthesiology of Maryland (a group of doctors and nurses).

My degree in Spanish absolutely helped me in my career! For example, I went to Chile for the requirement to study abroad. While there, I wrote a thesis on the government's health system. Later, I referred to that work in my graduate application. Also, when I was working at Hopkins, they assigned me to an important project that tried to improve the Hispanic community’s access to medical care. They knew I could understand and contribute much more than others because of my written and verbal proficiency in Spanish.
