Current status of Social Science and Humanities
Faculty Meeting

"As our population becomes more diverse and our economy becomes more globally integrated, Americans' quality of life increasingly depends on understanding the human dimensions that can better sustain our environment, promote public health, maintain a robust economy, reduce conflict, and advance democracy." Myron Gutmann, the NSF Assistant Director of Social, Behavior and Economic Sciences, 2013.

Overall there is a lack of recognition from many about the skills and strength that the social sciences and humanities bring to our society.

Social Sciences

“Social science is the scientific study of society and the ways in which we relate to one another. It helps explain how society works – from the causes of unemployment or what drives economic growth, to how and why people vote, or what makes people happy. Social scientists are influential because the work they do helps determine government policy and can change how we interact with the institutions and environments that influence our behavior, such as the legal system, social services, our neighborhoods, schools, and universities.” Nuffield Foundation

“The humanities can be described as the study of how people process and document the human experience and to understand and record our world… Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come before us as well as to our contemporaries.” Stanford University
