Le Moyne College has received three grants from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation (MCHF) totaling $1 million. The grants – to support nursing students, the Center for Aging Resources (CARE), and the Healthcare Advancement Resource Center (HARC) - are renewals of grants for initiatives the foundation previously funded and will support three distinct areas of the healthcare community in Central New York during the 2024 calendar year. Since the Foundation's inception in 2019, they have awarded Le Moyne more than $3.5 million in grant funding.
“Through their shared focus of supporting traditionally underserved populations in the healthcare sector, these three programs continue to further Le Moyne’s mission of creating a more just society,” said Meega Wells, Ph.D., dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies. “I am grateful to the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and their on-going support of these initiatives, which enables Le Moyne to continue its positive impact on the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community.”
The grants will support:
Cabrini Scholarships in Nursing ($400,000): The College will receive funding for expanding enrollment in its nursing program by providing scholarships and academic support, such as tutoring, textbook stipends and a one-credit college preparation course, to traditionally underrepresented students. Le Moyne will recruit an additional 12 to 18 students (“Cabrini Scholars”) from low-income backgrounds who will more closely mirror the ethnic and racial composition of Central New York. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for nurses has grown exponentially. The program is being supported by members of the nursing program, enrollment management, financial aid, student success and advancement and innovation.
CARE ($75,000): This funding will be used to help mitigate the issues of social isolation and loneliness for seniors by providing both in-person and virtual opportunities for social connection through a variety of events and discussions such as fraud prevention presentations and the third annual Brady Market Fair in collaboration with the Brady Faith Center.
HARC ($525,000) - Launched in 2020 thanks to a $500,000 grant from the MCHF, HARC helps healthcare workers who received their education and training in a foreign country to obtain credentials, certifications and additional training or education needed to work in the healthcare sector in the United States. Since its inception, HARC has enrolled and offered case management services to more than 175 participants. With the renewed funding, HARC plans to enroll 50 more foreign-trained medical graduates interested in healthcare in the U.S. and to enhance its existing services.
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of vulnerable communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services. Named after a tireless advocate for immigrants, children, and the poor, the foundation funds programs and initiatives across New York State that either provide direct healthcare services or address the social determinants of health.
