Syracuse International Film Festival
Le Moyne is a major sponsor of the Syracuse International Film Festival; and the Film Program functions as liaison between the festival and the college. This collaboration offers students many opportunities: to intern with the festival throughout the academic year; to work with area high-school students; to attend festival pre-screenings and events. Each year, for example, Le Moyne hosts a film festival event: one year, we hosted a panel discussion on the topic of Politics, Economics, and Film. Another year, we brought together filmmakers (like Ben Beye from Senegal) and prominent human rights activists (like Morton Halperin and Diane Orentlicher) in a panel discussion of genocide in fact and in film. More recently, we hosted a film festival sidebar centering around the screening of three films related by their general interest in examining conflict and conflict resolution. Each screening was followed by a discussion led by a Le Moyne faculty member. And in the case of one film, we sponsored the attendance of the director, who spoke with the audience after the screening.
The Le Moyne College Film Club holds meetings periodically throughout the semester; there is a screening of a movie, free pizza and soda, and a follow-up open discussion about the film. All are welcome—not just film minors—and it is a great opportunity to openly discuss film and meet other students who perhaps share your interests. At the end of the semester, a movie and dinner outing is hosted by the club!
