Prayers and Support for Haiti, Others Impacted by Hurricane

The following message was sent to the Le Moyne campus community on Oct. 11:

By now, we are all aware of the destruction wrought by Hurricane Matthew. Of the estimated 1,100 deaths, 1,000 were killed in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, as the island nation was struck by the full force of the hurricane's 145-mile-per-hour winds. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 1.4 million people in Haiti are in need of humanitarian assistance.

To help with this massive relief effort, Catholic Relief Services has been on the scene since the storm hit and is working to respond to the immediate and long-term needs associated with the devastation and flooding. Collections at weekend Masses on campus for next several weeks will be for hurricane relief sponsored by the church and the Jesuit network. Donations for hurricane relief will be used to meet greatest needs such as blankets, kitchen and hygiene kits, and other emergency supplies as needed, as well as prevention of potential outbreaks of cholera and other diseases. You may also send checks to help with the effort to Campus Ministry. (Checks may be made payable to Le Moyne College, with Hurricane Relief added in note line.)

In addition to any financial assistance you are able to give, I ask that you join me in prayer for the people of Haiti, and others in the Caribbean region, Florida and coastal areas of the southeast United States who were impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

Please keep all those impacted by the storm in your thoughts as they struggle to recover.

    Sincerely,

    Linda M. LeMura, Ph.D.
    President
