OT Students Partners with Salvation Army Daycare

In Fall 2020 four occupational therapy students participated in a role-emerging fieldwork experience with Kathleen Goss, professor of practices for the Department of Occupational Therapy. The entire 12-week placement was completed in a virtual manner in partnership with the Salvation Army Daycare and Preschool.

Although this facility does not currently employ occupational therapists, students worked to explore the acute needs of the facility and learned how OT could benefit the staff, students, and families to truly serve this setting.  The students conducted a needs assessment, participated in weekly meetings with the director and her team, and completed evidence-based research in order to develop a program for the facility. Students developed and implemented bi-weekly, developmentally appropriate virtual sessions with each classroom.

The four students also created a parental program that educated parents on the developmental milestones by age group and provided them specific activities in order to promote further development to reach these milestones at home. Further resources including videos, handouts, and pictures were attached for parents to access on their own time. This program and these resources were welcomed by the facility who stated they would also use the program as an educational tool for incoming faculty.
