Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation: "Dream or Nightmare? Black Bodies in a 'Post-Racial' America"

Le Moyne College's annual Martin Luther King Jr. convocation will feature keynote speaker George Yancy, Ph.D., from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. The topic of his talk will be "Dream or Nightmare? Black Bodies in a 'Post-Racial' America."

Dr. Yancy will address what he calls high-stakes philosophy - challenging all forms of oppression (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) that speaks to concrete suffering. He will primarily explore the post-racial mockery through examples of the pervasive racial trauma experienced by black bodies within the context of anti-black racism. He will conclude with his analysis of how a fundamental critique of whiteness is essential to the birth of King's beloved community.

Dr. Yancy's areas of research include critical philosophy of race and African-American philosophy. He earned a doctorate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The talk is sponsored by the Division of Student Development, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Office of Mission Integration.
