Professor Blakeley teaches courses in creativity, scene design, lighting design, stagecraft, and Theatre Context, the capstone class for theatre majors. As resident designer, working alongside student crews, he has created sets for more than 75 plays during his thirty-five years at Le Moyne. Karel has also designed sets (and sometimes lights) for Gifford Family Theatre, Cortland Repertory Theatre, Syracuse Stage, Syracuse University, Syracuse Shakespeare Festival, University of Maine, University of Hartford in Connecticut, Lake Erie College in Ohio, and at the University of Toronto in Canada (as a part of their medieval theatre festivals).

His scenic designs for Simply New Theatre earned him a Syracuse-area theatre (S.A.L.T.) award. He has delivered numerous design presentations to the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT), as well as presenting many design workshops for teachers and students at New York State Theatre Educators Association (NYSTEA) conferences. Karel compiled and edited Projects for Teaching Scene Design (Volume 1), which is published by USITT.
